Kelolalaut.com Black pomfret, a popular fish in Asian cuisine, is primarily exported by India, Pakistan, and Indonesia. India leads the global market with 22,992 export shipments, accounting for approximately 87% of total exports. Pakistan follows with 1,239 shipments (5% market share), and Indonesia contributes 850 shipments (3% market share).

In terms of export destinations, Kuwait is the largest importer, receiving 5,752 shipments, which constitutes 25% of global exports. Hong Kong and the United Kingdom are also significant markets, importing 3,217 and 3,158 shipments, respectively, each representing 14% of total exports.

For instance, in September 2023, a shipment of 1,962 cartons of frozen fish, including 95 cartons of frozen black pomfret, was exported from China to the United States.

These figures highlight the substantial role of India, Pakistan, and Indonesia in the global black pomfret export market, with Kuwait, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom being the primary importers.

The export market for black pomfret continues to be dominated by a few key players. Among them:

  • India remains the largest exporter, with its ports shipping black pomfret to various parts of the world. In 2023, India sent a significant share of global exports, particularly to countries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe. This includes substantial exports to Kuwait, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom, as mentioned earlier.
  • Pakistan also plays a vital role, with exports contributing to the demand from neighbouring countries in the Middle East, as well as global markets like the United States and Europe. Although its market share is smaller compared to India, it is still a prominent supplier, especially in regional trade.
  • Indonesia contributes to the market with significant exports to neighbouring countries and beyond. Indonesian black pomfret is often sought after due to its quality and the country’s established fishing industry.

While the Middle East remains the largest consumer of black pomfret, countries like the United States and Canada are becoming increasingly important markets due to growing demand among Asian communities and seafood lovers.

Trade dynamics have shifted somewhat due to evolving supply chain factors, including shipping costs, regional demand, and changing regulations. As a result, global exporters are focusing on increasing their supply chain efficiency to meet demand while maintaining product quality.
