Additionally, parrotfish contribute to the formation of sandy beaches. After digesting coral, they excrete fine sand, which accumulates over time and forms beautiful white beaches. A single large parrotfish can produce hundreds of pounds of sand each year.

Despite their ecological importance, parrotfish face significant threats due to overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. In many regions, they are heavily harvested for food, disrupting their populations and negatively affecting reef health.

To protect these unique fish, conservation efforts focus on establishing marine protected areas, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and raising awareness about their importance to coral reefs. Some regions have even implemented bans on parrotfish fishing to safeguard their crucial role in maintaining marine biodiversity.
