Once flipped, you’ll see the internal organs, which need to be removed. Using your fingers or a knife, gently pull or scrape out the contents. Discard the waste and rinse the head thoroughly under cold water.

The beak is a hard, black structure located at the centre of the tentacles. To remove it, turn the octopus over so the beak is visible at the base of the tentacles. Gently squeeze the area around the beak and push it out. If it doesn’t come out easily, use the tip of your knife to help. Discard the beak.

Inspect the tentacles and body for any remaining debris or slimy residue. Rinse the entire octopus under cold running water. If there’s excess skin or membranes you’d like to remove, gently rub the surface with your fingers or scrape it lightly with a knife. One popular method is to massage the octopus with coarse salt for a few minutes before rinsing it off. Alternatively, freezing the octopus and then thawing it before cooking can also help break down its fibbers.

Step 6: Drying and Storing

Once cleaned, pat the octopus dry with paper towels. If you’re not cooking it immediately, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days. For longer storage, freeze it in a sealed bag or container.
